Finished!

Here is Lazarus Coffin, one of the main characters of Under the Apple Tree. He's a ghost from the Civil War, as you can probably tell from his uniform. This piece doubles as an assignment for my Illustration class in which we are to submit a piece of artwork for the front of Portland's First Friday Art Walk brochure. Wish me luck in getting that spot!

I would really appreciate some crit on this, as the brochure placement is a great opportunity and I want to make this as great as possible! It is due this Wednesday, April 8th, so anything past Tuesday will most likely not be changed.

Paper texture from sxc.hu!

It's indeed an interesting piece. Would probably do even better with some more rigidity, but it's very nice.

Give some examples of rigidity? For future reference. : )

It's just, about line/shape treatment on this. The geometries at work in the drawing and how straight lines and square angles would probably convey a mood more appropriate. The guy is sinister, which I understand is perfectly fine, but the shapes composing him are sort all making compromise in a sense. Maybe squarer shoulders rather than the way they kind of droop, a straighter sleeve, stiffer neck, "cleaner" hair, would all contribute to giving him a "harder" look and reinforcing his military groove. Also, the tree makes me think of an olive tree branch like you tend to find them on olive oil bottle labels. You know the symbolism for olive trees, too. Small leaves like that have a way of hinting at some sense of birthing, early springtime renewal, the tree branch is neither gnarled nor sharp, it has a soft feel. All of this works together at a kind of subconscious level to tell me the wrong things about the drawing. I appreciate the execution overall, but I think the elements I mentioned give the wrong mood, after the sinister theme has been established. Do you know what I mean?
