Goodness, I love the liquify tool. I wasn't happy with this at first and I couldn't tell why, but after waiting a couple days and coming back to it I spotted some issues with the shape of her head that, with just some minor liquify/paint tool touchup, disappeared.
In spite of its simple appearance, I worked on this on and off all day Sunday. I am so glad I could fix it!
Visit my blog for information on what the piece is for, why it resembles Rosie the Riveter, etc! [link]
I like it. I'd do something such as patterning the background with something simple such as vertical stripes or something, to energize the thing without breaking it up or altering its flow. Other than that I really think the flats + localized shading on the character works well.
Hmm... good idea. I'll probably go back to it, now I'm noticing some things after putting it down for a day (like how she looks a bit like she got punched in the nose), so when I open it up again I'll experiment with background textures. : )
This makes me smile. ^^ The yellow background is quite catching and I think the colors you've chosen stand out nicely against it. Perhaps make the text bigger? It seems rather small compared to the rest of your piece. Also, given how closely this resembles Rosie the Riveter...was there a reason you picked that poster to emulate? Or was just for the lulz?
In the comic she thinks she wants to be a nurse. This is an idea for a cover further down the line when she's faced with an opportunity to try nursing, but she's not very confident about it. I thought it'd be cute to have a parody of that poster, but put her in a candy striper uniform and instead of "I Can Do It" confidence, she'd have more like "Can I Do It?" hesitance. (It'll make more sense in context!) The text will probably change to something like that, but as a separate piece I thought I'd just put in the title logo.
Thanks!
